Next Steps

Interviews will be conducted for open positions throughout the year for the after school program, or from late May-early June for the summer program. If you are selected for an interview, we will notify you by phone or text.

Before participating in our programs you will need to complete needed paperwork.

  1. All youth and their parent/guardian must complete a consent form we will keep on file.

  2. Any student earning $600 or higher in stipends in any year will also need to complete a federal W9 form. Find out more information by reading this letter.

You can complete these in person OR follow the link below to complete them online.

Program Structure

Youth are not employees of R CITY or Harambee Citybuilders, but are volunteer participants in the apprenticeship program.  There are two requirements for participation:

  1. Participants must attend classes of our Life Skills Course, for which an educational stipend will be given every two weeks.  This course will explore a variety of topics with an emphasis on healthy personal identity, conflict resolution, relationships, basic financial literacy and job skills.

  2. Participants must contribute volunteer hours in our Volunteer Community Service Projects.  Through these projects, Harambee Citybuilders provides subsidized tuckpointing (replacing mortar between bricks) to low-income homeowners in the city of Chicago.  Other apprentices will serve their volunteer service within R CITY's Dreambuilders Children's Program. The number of hours per day and days per week will depend on the participant’s Track level.

Harambee Track Levels

Harambee Citybuilders apprentices are divided into three separate tracks, which determine the stipend amount received for class attendance, the number of volunteer hours required each day, and both the level of responsibility and types of duties the participant has during the program.
