About R CITY
R CITY stands upon the historic relationships of its Executive Director, Elizabeth Galik, Partnership Director, Brandon Green and its parent organization, River City Community Church. In 2006, Elizabeth Galik began her service to West Humboldt Park, founding a community center to serve students from Cameron Elementary School. During the same period, River City--a multicultural church devoted to neighborhood development--began a relationship of service to that same school. Backpack drives, Thanksgiving food, in-school tutoring, and meetings with school leaders all became staples of River City church. Brandon Green serving on pastoral staff welcomed neighborhood teens into the building through nights of basketball, bible study and deep conversation.
In fall 2015, River City Community Church, Elizabeth Galik & Brandon Green came together to begin a new venture: R CITY. R CITY serves the same community with a commitment to walk children all the way to career, surrounding them with web of support and resources.
R CITY programming has expanded significantly since our program launch in 2015. At that time, Brandon Green headed up our programming efforts providing bi-weekly after-school enrichment programs and our Young Leaders’ Cohort, a group of 12 high-risk, high-potential 6th-8th grade students who were both our main service focus and our advisory council on after-school programs.
Since then we’ve expanded our programs in scope and breadth seeking out innovative ways to walk with our youth from cradle to career. The administration of Cameron Elementary School continues in close relationship to R CITY and collaborates to shape programs and continually support youth. In 2017, Anthony and Michelle Johnson, WHP residents with over a decade of experience in youth masonry apprenticeships, joined R CITY to fully launch its apprenticeship program. In 2018, the staff of R CITY are 67% people of color and 77% local residents; this results in greater understanding of the youth and families served.
